The above image (click for a larger version) is the result of some detailed photographic restoration work to bring back to life the patterned velvet fabric from Queen Anne's State Bed. The bed dates from 1714 and this section of fabric is only one of the smallest parts of the bed.The valance was accurately photographed in a number of sections which were then pieced together to form a fully representative high resolution image. Photographs were also taken of the undamaged rear side of a separate section of patterned fabric and this aided the digital restoration of the damaged section.
Each part of the pattern was slightly different, the original fabric differs slightly in each repeat and years of being hung vertically has distorted any useful repeats.
The final restored image will be printed life size on to the fine mesh used by the conservators to support both the fragile original fabric and their physical restoration work.
This cutting edge approach will be used to conserve & restore the fabric over the whole of the bed ready for it's display in 2013.
